Recently someone I know wanted to start working, but it was soon clear that they were missing something very important – a valid Belize social security card. This issue can also come up for people whose social security card is no longer valid. So if you need a new social security card or looking renew your current one – this is how it's done. The steps below should help with that process:
- To start, gather the prerequisites you need to update or get a new social security card. The requirements for different people are different, so refer to them at the bottom of this page.
- Generally, you just need your passport/birth certificate and photo ID (such as a voter ID card or primary or second school student ID) to renew your card, and you need your passport (or photo ID) and birth certificate to get a new one.
- In addition, they might ask you for your spouse's and/or parent's name and social security number, so gathering those to be safe is advisable.
- Then, go to the Social Security Board. ( Google maps of the location. ) It is near the civic center, police station and post office off the ring road.
- You will have to take a ticket with a number and wait there for about 30 minutes to an hour if it is busy.
- While you're waiting, you'll need to fill out a sheet (there are several on a nearby table, asking the closest the employee will help if you cannot find it).
- Once you fill it out and your number is called you hand up the necessary documents.
- If they accept them, they'll call you again in a few minutes to have your picture taken. After that, they’ll tell you to pick up your new social security card, generally within a week.
If you need additional information about any of the steps mentioned above, you can contact Social Security directly by calling (822-2163) or chat with them through their website.
